Risaralda in the PCCC

Colombia currently has more than 1,960 registered bird species, making it the country with the highest bird diversity in the world.

In the heart of the Colombian Coffee Cultural Landscape (PCCC) lies Risaralda, a small territory in size—barely around 4,000 square kilometers, less than 1% of the national territory—but immense in biodiversity.

Its privileged location allows it to encompass almost all thermal floors: from the warm banks of the Cauca River in La Virginia (899 m / 2,949 ft above sea level) to the snow-capped peaks of the Santa Isabel volcano (4,945 m / 16,224 ft above sea level). This geographic richness explains why Risaralda is one of the departments with the greatest natural diversity in the country, especially in birds.

Pereira, its capital, is today a global reference for birdwatching, with approximately 240 species recorded just in its urban area. Across the entire department, nearly 900 species have been documented, representing almost 45% of Colombia’s birdlife.

In my region, it is possible to spot and photograph endemic birds in natural parks, wildlife and flora sanctuaries, and high-mountain ecosystems.

Bird photography is one of my great passions, and here I will share many of the images I have managed to capture in this wonderful territory.
