THE COFFEE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF COLOMBIA (PCCC)
World Heritage
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's World Committee for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) inscribed the Coffee Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage List on June 25, 2011. It is an exceptional example of community adaptation to the difficult geographical conditions in which hillside and mountain coffee cultivation developed.
The PCCC has suffered, during the contemporary period, only rare incongruous additions to its traditional architecture and landscape, and there have been no substantial modifications in the small villages located in the heart of the property and in the buffer zone. Traditions, language and other forms of intangible heritage are aspects preserved, particularly by the owners and the local community, who have a strong sense of social ownership of their cultural heritage.
This region is crossed by the Andes mountain range and is characterized by its mountainous topography and varied climate. It includes the Andean moors (a unique ecosystem in the world), volcanic landscapes, tropical forests, coffee plantations, more than a thousand species of birds and biological corridors. Among this natural wealth we find coffee plantations with architecture from the late 19th century, unique in the world.
It brings together specific areas of 47 departments and 411 small rural villages in its main area and in the buffer zone of the magnificent departments of Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca, located in the central and western arms of the Andes mountain range
